Women’s Global Empowerment Initiative (WGEI) proudly implemented the GIRL SHINE project in partnership with the African Women Initiative for Empowerment and Peacebuilding (AWIEP), targeting adolescent girls in refugee settlements in Ogoja, Nigeria.

This impactful initiative focused on empowering vulnerable adolescent girls through the proven Girl Shine curriculum a comprehensive, girl-centred life skills program designed to build resilience, agency, and protection in humanitarian settings. Sessions equipped participants with essential knowledge on gender-based violence prevention, personal safety, healthy relationships, self-esteem, leadership, digital literacy and navigating challenges in crisis environments.

A key emphasis was placed on the intersection of adolescents and climate change, raising awareness about environmental impacts on girls’ lives, such as increased vulnerabilities from resource scarcity, displacement, and health risks, while fostering adaptive skills, advocacy, and community action for sustainable futures.

Caregivers were actively engaged through parallel sessions, fostering supportive family environments, challenging harmful norms, and strengthening protection networks around the girls.

Through safe group spaces, mentorship, and interactive activities, GIRL SHINE helped these young girls shine brighter, claim their rights, and become empowered agents of change amid adversity.

This cross-border collaboration reflects WGEI’s commitment to holistic empowerment across regions, supporting refugee and host communities to build brighter, more resilient tomorrows for adolescent girls.
